Newborn Essentials Checklist
December 22, 2025

Preparing for a newborn can feel overwhelming, especially when it seems like everyone has a long list of things you must buy. The truth is that babies don’t need nearly as much as the internet may suggest. What they need most of care, safety, and support.
Here’s a simple, realistic list of newborn essentials to help you prepare without unnecessary stress or expense!
Clothing Basics
Newborns grow quickly, so a small amount goes a long way.
• Onesies
• Sleepers or footed pajamas
• Warm layers (depending on the time of year
• Socks
• A hat (for cooler weather)
Diaper Essentials
You don’t need a whole fancy setup. Just the basics!
• Diapers
• Baby wipes
• Diaper rash cream
• Changing pad or a soft towel
• Baby powder
Any large bag can work as a diaper bag.
Feeding Supplies
Every feeding journey looks different, and that’s okay.
If breastfeeding:
• Nursing bras or tank tops
• Burp clothes
• Breast pump
• Breast milk bags (they’re sterilized and leak-proof, regular Ziploc bags aren’t)
• Baby bottles
When freezing extra breast milk, make sure to leave about one inch of space at the top of the bag. Label the bag with the date and freeze the milk flat for easier thawing and efficient storage.
If formula feeding:
• Baby bottles
• Formula (as recommended)
• Bottle brush
Sleep Basics
Creating a safe space for your baby to sleep is one of the most important preparations.
• Crib or bassinet
• Firm mattress
• Fitted sheet
Make sure there are no loose blankets, pillows, or toys in the bed.
Health and Comfort Items
A few simple items can make everyday care a whole lot easier.
• Infant thermometer
• Baby nail clippers or file
• Gentle baby soap and lotion
• Soft towels or washcloths
• Baby bath seat
